Periodontistry is a surgical speciality of Dentistry that deals with the treatment, support, and prevention of diseases that affect structures of the teeth: gums, bones, tounge, and cheeks. This field is also in charge of preventing and treating implants directly related to diseases like peri-implatitis. These diseases show up as gingivitis or periodontitis, the degeneration of the bone that supports the tooth.
Periodontists specialize in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of the above diseases, along with specializing in the treatment of oral inflammation. When examining severe gum diseases, periodontists gnerally check to see if there is any gum line recession, assess how the teeth fit together when bitting, and determine the depth of the periodontal pockets. Recent studies have suggested a relationship between periodontal disease andother chronic diseases of aging.
